Healthy Families Initiative Promotes Local Food, Family Wellness
Families learned yoga this summer as part of Healthy Families St. Croix Valley.
The warmer days of summer are a great time to get active and enjoy an abundance of local produce, and parents and their young children participating in Healthy Families St. Croix Valley did exactly that. This new initiative offered families information on healthy food preparation and ideas on involving their kids in the kitchen, as well as yoga and relaxation instruction.
“We know that healthy habits start early,” said Family Resource Center’s Executive Director Patty Draxler. “When families choose nutritious foods and an active lifestyle, they are promoting positive health outcomes for their children with impacts that continue into adulthood. We are thrilled to bring together support from Hungry Turtle Institute, Polk County Public Health and St. Croix Valley Foundation in this pilot project.”
A total of 20 families participated in classes held throughout the summer at the Hungry Turtle Institute (HTI), a 501c3 nonprofit organization in Amery with a mission to support sustainable agriculture and land stewardship through education, innovative partnerships and programming. HTI operates with the belief that hunger is an opportunity to build community and creatively meet the need to feed ourselves well… knowing that what we do today creates tomorrow’s world.
